Amsterdam
When you think of Amsterdam, you think of historic, romantic canals. But the city is obviously a lot more than just that. Dynamic, tolerant and multi-cultural: Amsterdam combines it all. And does it 24 hours a day. It’s not without good reason that a lot of people call the city ‘the smallest metropolis in the world’. The Amstel Botel is right in the heart of it. Literally: its berth is on the River IJ, the river along which Amsterdam flourished in the Golden Age.
NDSM shipyard
The NDSM (Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij) shipyard was a shipbuilding yard in Amsterdam from 1946 to 1984. After it went bankrupt, squatters took possession of the empty buildings. Since then the area has grown, with support from the council, to become the city’s largest cultural breeding ground. Here festivals, shows and events are held throughout the year. Around 250 artists are working there, in the visual arts, design, theatre, film, media and architecture. There are also various craftsmen and small firms located at the site.
